Welcome to the
Tall Pines Scenic Railroad

The Tall Pines Scenic Railroad is located in Berwick, Maine on 15+ acres. The land is heavily wooded with a mixture of Red and White Pines, Hemlock, Fir, Maple, Oak, and Birch trees.
There is 3778' of 15" guage track made up from 12 lb rail lag bolted to 4 x 4 x 30" pressure treated ties. Heavy duty landscape fabric was first put down to prevent ballast from sinking into the ground and to prevent weed growth. Finally, 3/4" stone ballast is being used to level the track.
LOCOMOTIVE
Tall Pines Scenic Railroad currently has a 3" scale GE 50 ton 0-4-0 switcher. The prime mover is a Kohler 16 hp gas engine driving a hydraulic pump which in turn drives two hydraulic motors, one on each axle. The locomotive has an air system for train brakes and air horns and has operating headlights. Weight - 1200 lbs, Wheel diameter - 8 5/8", Fuel - gasoline, capacity 3.6 gal.
ROLLING STOCK
There are five freight cars on the railroad. These include one flat car, one 2 bay hopper, one low side gondola, one high side gondola, and one boxcar. Also included are one MOW weed spraying car, and one MOW backhoe car. This is basically a flat car with a backhoe attached to the deck. I'm also fitting an old electric lawnmower to the boom for mowing duties.
NEWS
Spring has finally sprung and all the snow is gone. Time to start another busy season of running trains. This past winter was long and cold, but I did manage to get a lot of work done in the shop. The "Flexicoil" style trucks have been completed and are just waiting for the locomotives to be built over them. Originally, I thought of making two locomotives based on the SD-45, but have since modified those thoughts. Since I am not a finescaler in any sense of the term, I am now leaning towards a generic style of locomotive. That is to say nothing in particular and anything in general. Who knows, I may go back to the SD-45 design. Anyway, that is next winters project. On to summer. This year will be mostly maintenance, that is, weed wacking, mowing grass, and general problem solving should anything come up. I also plan to put down more ballast and finish the station area.
I have added a bunch of pictures to the construction page mostly detailing the new trucks.
I am always looking for volunteer help with the railroad. If you live in the area and are interested in the construction, maintenance, and operation of a large scale railroad, please let me know.
The line is private and not open to the general public, occasional exceptions are made for model railroad enthusiasts. Please e-mail for more information.
Thanks for visiting the "TALL PINES SCENIC RAILROAD".
